Statistics

About 36000 SMEs in 1997. Main sectors are the service sectors; the construction and the productive sectors.

Human resources

Brunei's SMEs also provides at least 70% of employment in the private sector.

Entrepreneurship

Brunei's government initiatives, professional talent and foreign collaborations has improved the entrepreneurship scene, especially in the manufacturing and services sector.

• financial assistance schemes for SMEs.

Supporting organizations

The Resource Centre of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources established in 1996, provides technical and entrepreneurial assistance to SMEs. It has also developed the Brunei SME homepage as an information center for SMEs. It coordinates with other relevant departments and organizations to carry out its work. Its functions include:

• information dissemination
• assistance in establishing businesses
• upgrade skills of SMEs through training and human resource development
• encourage R&D & technology transfer
• accreditation to meet international standards
• networking with other organisations and institutes

As a member of APEC, Brunei Darussalam also participates in the APEC Ad Hoc Policy Level group on Small and Medium Enterprises meeting. The Group, which was established in 1995, oversees activities for SMEs across all APEC groups.
