Canada’s international role in science and technology
Highlights of CSIRO work with Canadian institutions in 2000 included:
- R&D and commercialisation of a low linolenic acid linseed genotype as the basis for the production of an edible linseed oil named Linola
- comparison of measurements of stable carbon isotopes (13C) and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in sea water, part of an international program on ocean carbon parameters
- optimisation of service life of pipelines
- construction of a descriptive taxonomic database for the flora of the Canadian Arctic
- development of viral vector vaccines for pigs
- assisting the Iron Core Company of Canada, and Inco Technical Services, in analysis of samples using the CSIRO QEM*SEM system
- the genesis of unconformity-type uranium deposits in the Eastern Athabasca Basin, Saskatchewan
- collaboration and technology transfer for the ARIES project, with the Canadian Space Agency.
Multilateral projects involving Canada included:
- investigation into why Japanese beef subcutaneous fat is soft at temperatures below 10° but Australian beef fat is hard at these temperatures (with the USA)
- International Advanced Robotics Programme (IARP) (14 country partners)
- coordinate precision imaging of the sky and precision measurement of the Earth’s crustal motion (11 partners)
- design of the next generation of radio astronomy technology, the 1-sq km array (7 partners)
- application software for astronomical research (6 partners)
- development and industrial application of techniques for the online determination of hydrogen and related properties in the mineral and energy industries (15 partners)
- hydrodynamics and fault seal assessment in the Timor Sea and the Carnarvon Basin (5 partners)
- advanced electromagmetic and IP modelling for complex geology (11 partners)
- searches for pulsars in our galaxy, in globular clusters, supernova remnants and other objects using the Parkes radio telescope (4 partners)
- using acoustic thermometry to investigate ocean temperatures
- ‘down regulation’ of polyphenol oxidase genes in apple, bananas, lettuce and potato to produce fruit and vegetables with decreased browning (4 partners)
- international working group whose brief is to establish a framework for defining and applying software process measures as a support process for controlling and improving software life-cycle processes (9 partners)
- international guidelines for assessment of pollutant emissions from materials and equipment
- collaboration through the Committee On Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Working Groups on (1) Data calibration/validation and (2) Information Systems and Services (12 partners plus the EU)
- IMS Holonic Manufacturing Systems (11 partners)
- methods of estimating uncertainty in fish stock assessments (7 partners)
- research and training support for fumigation using cylinderised phosphine (with USA)
- participation in the International Network of Protein Engineering Centres (INPEN) (14 partners)
