Telephone Companies

The Canadian telecommunications services industry is comprised of facilities-based carriers, value-added resellers, and resellers. Local and long-distance services are provided by the following: the Stentor Alliance of Canada's major telephone companies consisting of Bell Canada, British Columbia Telephone (BC Tel); Saskatchewan Tel (Sask Tel); Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company Limited (MT&T), Manitoba Telecom Services Incorporated (MTS), New Brunswick Telephone Company (NB Tel); Newfoundland Tel (New Tel), Quebec-Telephone (Quebec Tel); Island Telephone Limited (Island Tel), Northwest Telephone Incorporated (Northwest Tel), and Telus Communications Incorporated (Telus); more than 40 independent telephone companies; and four inter-exchange carriers consisting of AT&T Canada, Sprint Canada, Fonorola, and ACC TelEnterprises.

In addition, Canada has an overseas carrier, Teleglobe Canada, and its satellite carrier is Telesat Canada (now majority-owned by Bell Canada). Although Teleglobe Canada has an exclusive mandate to provide intercontinental traffic both to and from Canada, it is now preparing for competition, with the deregulation of its market in October 1998.
