Medical Equipment

Market trends

The Canadian market for medical equipment is largely dictated by government spending patterns. Publicly administered hospitals account for the bulk of demand for medical laboratory equipment in Canada. However, private laboratories performing both tests for patients and research for client institutions now account for almost 20 percent of market demand.

The total market was estimated at US$100.2 million in 1996. Total imports, at US$93.8 million, accounted for 94 percent of total demand.

End-User Analysis

Approximately 80 percent of the end-users of medical laboratory equipment in Canada are public medical institutions. These include labs in public hospitals, and government research laboratories which often coordinate their efforts with major hospitals.

The remaining 20 percent of end-users is composed of private laboratories. Recently, these new end-users of medical laboratory equipment have proliferated throughout Canada. Private laboratories sometimes provide analytical services to hospitals which find it more efficient to outsource their laboratory services.
