Federal government financing was concentrated in the Aircraft and parts industry, which received $207 million, Other electronic equipment (excluding Telecommunication equipment and Electronic parts and components), which received $42 million and Engineering and scientific services, which received $32 million of federal funding. Foreign funding was particularly significant in the Telecommunication equipment industry, where it amounted to $886 million, and for the Business machines industry ($181 million). Other Canadian sources of funds included $288 million made available by Canadian corporations to their R&D affiliates, $196 million paid by Canadian corporations for R&D undertaken by unaffiliated companies and research institutes, and $131 million funded by provincial governments.
Most of the industrial R&D in Canada were performed in Ontario and Québec. About 55% of all R&D in 1997 (the most recent year for which these data are available) was performed in Ontario, where Electrical and Electronic products industries are particularly prominent. In fact, 78% of the industrial R&D performed in the Electrical and Electronic industries (Telecommunication equipment, Electronic parts and components, Other electronic equipment, Business machines and Other electrical products) took place in Ontario. In Québec, the Aircraft and parts industry is of major importance, with 51% of total R&D expenditures by this industry in 1997 occuring in that province

In 1997, there were 8,260 firms that performed R&D. Of these, 464 were foreign controlled and they accounted for 34% ($2,925 million) of the total intramural R&D expenditures, compared to $5,594 million for Canadian-controlled companies.
