This paper was prepared and released by Science and Technology Section, Science and Technology Redesign Project, Statistics Canada in Sept 1998. The purpose of the project was to develop useful indicators of activity and a framework to tie them together into a coherent picture of a science and technology in Canada.
Historical tables displaying Federal Government Expenditures and personnel applied to activities in science and technology are presented. The figures for each fiscal year to 1996-97 are actual while the data for 1997-98 and 1998-99 are forecasts and estimates respectively. The expenditure data for scientific activities controlled by federal departments and agencies provided correspond to the budgetary expenditures by program presented in Main Estimates for approval of Parliament. Hence the following types of costs or expenditures are not included:
The definitions used in collecting the data for this report are essentially the same as those used by the OECD in its Frascati Manual and by UNESCO in its "Manual for Statistics on Scientific and Technological Activities".
The term, Natural and Social Sciences include physical sciences, life sciences, anthropology, demography, economics, geography, history, languages, literature and linguistics, law, library science, philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, social work, sociology and urban and regional studies.
