Project Background

The measurable share of international technology transfer i.e. trade with patents, licenses and technical know-how has been dominated by multinational companies for years, as also R&D internationalization i.e. setting up of own R&D laboratories abroad. In recent years, the internationalization trend has accelerated as a result of the greater speeds at which information technologies are being disseminated, making it easier for multinational firms to organize their research activities into transnational networks. Hence a study was made to find out the internationalisation patterns in Science and Technology, especially in the R&D sector among APEC economies.

This project, DataBase on R&D Internationalization in the Industrial sector among APEC member Economies, was endorsed at the 17th APEC/IST-WG meeting in August 99. Japan is the sponsoring economy for this study. Other three co-sponsoring economies are Korea, Russia and Thailand.

This project aims at developing a database for R&D Internationalization among APEC economies. This WEB database enables us to access R&D institutions (including universities) among APEC region easily. It is available as Internet homepages, CD-ROMs and publications. It helps companies in other countries to know more about internationalization in the APEC region. The database is a follow up project of the earlier APEC survey project: ‘Study on R&D Internationalization in Industrial sector among APEC member Economies’, completed in August 1999.
